What to know before your first open mat
What is a BJJ open mat?
Unstructured mat time with no instructor leading a class. People show up, pair off and roll, drill, or work positions with whoever is there. Most gyms host one on a fixed day each week, and many welcome visitors from other academies.
Can beginners go to an open mat?
Usually yes, but check the listing and the gym: some are all levels, some are advanced only, and a few are members only. If you’re brand new, tell whoever runs the room and pick partners who’ll go light.
Do open mats cost money?
It depends on the gym. Many are included for members and charge visitors a mat fee, some are free for everyone, and others are members only. RollPass shows the fee when a gym publishes it; otherwise assume there may be a drop-in fee and confirm with the gym before you go.
Gi or no-gi?
Both exist, and some gyms alternate by week. The listing’s title and description say which; when in doubt, bring both and ask.
What should I bring, and how should I behave?
Clean gear, a rash guard under a gi, water, and flip-flops for off the mat. Tap early, match the room’s intensity, ask before jumping into a round, and thank the coach or owner on the way out.
How current are these schedules?
Every listing links to the gym’s own published schedule, is re-checked weekly, and is removed when the gym drops it. Schedules still change on short notice, so verify with the gym before you drive over.
